Beginners Art

 

Course Description:

Students will explore the basic elements of art with a strong emphasis on drawing and sketching with pencil.  The course will develop the students’ drawing technique as well as their creativity, while helping to build a long lasting interest in art.  At the end of the course, students will be able to draw and shade simple realistic still-lifes. 

 

The following topics will be covered:

 

1.      Observation

2.      Elements of art: line, shape/form, value, color, space, texture

3.      Composition

4.      Perspective

5.      Contour Line and Shading

 

Requirements:

The course is designed for students around the ages of 5 to 10.  No previous experience is required.  There will be short homework assignments each week.  The necessary materials will be discussed later in class. 

 

Teacher Background:

            Milo Tong is a sophomore at Methacton High School.  She has studied art in private classes for eight years.  Recently she has been taking senior level art classes at her high school.  Next year she will take AP Studio art.  She has taught numerous art lessons at Kids Peace and Methacton elementary schools with the National Art Honor Society.  Her school library has purchased her work.  She has received second place in the 2004 US National Youth Art Competition and designed the 2004-2005 Diversity Committee International Festival Logo for the Methacton School District.  She is particularly strong in her oil paintings, pastels, and sketches.
