Subject: 2005 Chicago Regional Opportunity Conference
Date: Mon, 3 Oct 2005 17:17:16 -0400
Dear Friend,
Once again, under the leadership of Secretary Elaine L. Chao, the U.S. Department of Labor will host an Opportunity Conference focused on economic opportunities for the Asian Pacific, Hispanic, and African American communities. This year marks our first Regional Opportunity Conference, and will be held in the Chicago Metro Area.
Co-sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor, the Asian American Alliance, the Illinois Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, and the Chicago Urban League, this one-day Conference is scheduled for November 9, 2005 at the Waterford Conference Center in Elmhurst/Oakbrook.
The conference features presentations tailored to assist these communities and foster business growth by emphasizing key aspects of economic development, including job training, marketing, and understanding government procurement opportunities. Workshops will focus on developing small businesses, accessing capital, federal contracting, grant application strategies, and assisting faith-based and community organizations. A new addition this year highlights how to access Federal resources and information in an easy to use format.
Online registration is now available at www.OpportunityConference.gov.
Please forward this information to friends, colleagues, and others who might find this FREE conference useful.
Sincerely,
The Office of the 21st Century Workforce
U.S. Department of Labor

Goals
The course will be an introduction to playing the classical guitar. This instrument can be viewed as belonging to the larger family of Western classical instruments. Some key features that distinguish it from other types of guitars are the manner of playing, by plucking the strings with the fingers, and the holding position. Notation of written music is more similar to that of other classical instruments than certain different guitar styles. Although a large part of the repertoire is drawn from classical music, there is no restriction as to the type of music that can be played on this instrument. In a sense the qualifier "classical" of the guitar refers more to the style of playing than to the type of music played.
During the course the following areas will be especially emphasized:
1. Musical interpretation. Music is a means to express yourself. Performing any piece of music is all about conveying your own personal message to the listener. We will learn how to discover the story in each piece of written music and how to bring it to life on the guitar.
2. Solid technical skills. Playing any instrument requires developing good habits and a lot of practice to improve technical abilities. These are the tools we need to build in order to make the music sound just the way we intend it to.
3. Elements of theory. Finding out even a few basic principles about how music is structured will go a long way. It will make us listen to music in new ways and understand how composers think. Best of all, it will help memorizing that new piece we are trying to learn.
Practicing
Students are expected to practice playing at least 15 minutes every day. It is important to practice regularly. It is impossible to make up for missed days by practicing longer afterwards.
Required items
1. Guitar
When buying a guitar, one needs to consider several factors: type, size, cost/quality, source.
Make sure the instrument you buy is labeled as a "classical" guitar, and comes with nylon strings. DO NOT buy an "acoustic", "flamenco", or any other type. Depending on the physical development (age) of the player, either a full-size or 3/4 instrument will be needed. For a beginner, it is best to start with an inexpensive model, which these days are of quite good quality. For a reasonable full-size starter you should expect to pay $100-$200. 3/4 models should be less than $100. It is not recommended to buy an expensive 3/4 guitar, as your child will outgrow it soon. Better save the money for a higher quality second guitar.
There are many sources where one can purchase a guitar. You can shop around to find a good price. I recommended that you go to a store specializing in musical instruments. A reputable online source may be an option. Avoid department stores, as they are the most likely places where the rare, unplayable junk ends up. Please contact me if you need help selecting an instrument or have any questions. Below is my favorite store, although their full-size student guitars start at $350.

2. Foot stool
This item is needed for proper holding of the guitar during play.
3. Study book
We will use the guitar method by Julio S. Sagreras. It was originally published in 6 volumes in Spanish. Currently there are 2 English translations available. You may choose either one. The Mel Bay edition is more expensive, but contains bundled volumes 1-3. The first volume alone will take up 1-2 years of study.
* First Lesson for Guitar, Volume 1, Ricordi, 1992, ISBN: 0793535859
* Guitar Lessons, Books 1-3, Mel Bay, 1996, ISBN: 0786627239
4. 3-ring binder and pencil
Needed for keeping hand-outs and writing notes
Optional items
1. Case or bag
I strongly recommend buying at least a vinyl bag to protect your instrument when bringing it to class. You can learn playing a guitar without a case or bag, but you cannot learn it on a damaged guitar.
2. (Folding) note stand
A note stand will help you to look at the written music while playing.
3. Tuning fork or electronic tuner
Either of these is used for tuning to standard pitch. Doing this at home is not really necessary. Even if desired, a piano or electronic keyboard, if available, can be used instead of a tuner.

The potential instructor Mr. Hodor is a member of the Philadelphia classical Guitar Society (PCGS) orchestra. His child studies Chinese here.
Mr. Hodor is interested in teaching a small class of mixed-aged kids anywhere from 3rd to 10th grade (perhaps including parents). He can teach at the beginner level, introducing the students to playing in the tradition of the Italian and Spanish schools. In the future we could prepare an ensemble piece to be performed at the school's Spring Festival and also at the festival of the Philadelphia Classical Guitar Society (PCGS).
Mr. Hodor has been playing the guitar for over 20 years and has some previous teaching experience. Currently he plays at the PCGS orchestra for which he has arranged several pieces of their repertoire.
This is just a survey to find out how many people will be interested in English writing(we don't have the time table yet. It all depends on who and how many). English writing is not the same as writing in SAT. Writing in SAS is testing your ability to write correct English. Our English writing class goes beyond that. It also deals with style/rhetoric: how to express your idea correctly, effectively and elegantly.
In the corporate environment, saying correctly is minimal, saying effectively is of vital importance. Take English writing class will help you to be more successful in college and work.
We have a potential instructor who is a born English speaker. He is good at writing and majored in English Literature in college. If you have teenagers who are done/amost done with Chinese language and looking for interesting things to do, please consider English writing. For more detailed inquiry, please email jianwei_jchen@yahoo.com. Your email will be forwarded to the potential teacher.

1. The parents who use the gyms from 2-4 can elect a coordinator. The coordinator can collect money from the participants once a semester. Some parents have been doing this for a couple of years on Saturdays. You can learn from them.
2. The coordinator can deal with Montco directly. If assistance is needed, we'll be very happy to help out whenever we can.
We'll try to keep the gym classes(basketball, badminton, aerobics) from 4-5 as long as the gym teachers are willingly available.
All Guanghua parents are natural members of the Guanghua Chinese Association. This message is for the entire membership, including board members. If we don't receive a better solusion, we'll proceed with the resolution presented above.
